Fighting COVID-19 Together
During the start of the pandemic, the ACA launched a COVID-19 Community Relief Program to ensure the health and safety of both frontline workers and the community at large. By coming together and united in the fight against COVID- 19, over $31,000 was raised, over 22,000 PPEs were donated, and over 1,500 care packages and 1,000 power-up packs were delivered. Our student volunteers had participated in ACA’s events by helping their local communities by donating money, making face masks, face shields, and sending cards and well wishes to those working directly to end the threat of COVID-19.
Ingrid Huang (Vice-President, TVC):
During COVID-19, as a Girl Scout, I have been baking treats such as cookies, muffins, and more for Baldwin House every week! I have also donated care packages to the Beaumont Hospital. We are doing this to uplift each other and stick together during these difficult times! As an ACA library volunteer, some community service acts we have performed are maintaining the ACA library and dropping off books to kids from our reading program. Also, we cleaned up the ACA center together by pulling weeds and collecting litter outside during cleaning day.
Nicole Zhong (Director, TVC): Activity Ideas for Kids During COVID-19
The longer we are stuck at home, I am sure everyone is getting more and more fidgety. That is completely understandable, seeing as most of us have never had to deal with a pandemic like this before! However, it would be ridiculous to not mention that it is getting quite boring. So, while you are at home, why not do some service activities? These activities can all be completed at home with simple materials and are a way to give back to the community. As kids, we aren’t necessarily able to donate money or drive around to give back, but we can donate our time and energy from these service projects. Look at the ones I’ve listed below, and if you’re feeling especially bored one day, take one up!
CRAFTS: Make something to brighten someone’s day. These can be given to nursing homes, neighbors, or organizations like Meals on Wheels, Alpha House, Ozone House, Humane Society, and Paws with a Cause.
CARDS & LETTERS: Cards and letters can be given to VA hospital, Meals on Wheels, Operation Gratitude, nursing homes, essential workers (healthcare professionals, postal workers, teachers, etc.).
VIDEO RECORDINGS: Consider singing a song or duet with a friend or family member. Record yourself reading a children’s book to upload to YouTube, you never know who might enjoy it!
HOMEMADE TREATS: Surprise neighbors with a delicious treat. Thank essential workers with baked goods.
ACTION & ADVOCACY: Look up an organization working on an issue you care about. Support their work by sending emails, making calls, or writing a letter to the editor about the issue. Clean-up your neighborhood or a local park.
